what is the environment like for a pediatrician?

what is the environmental work there? how is it like everyday working there with kids? is it stressful, joyful? and what other information would be helpful to answer this question?

Thank you comment icon I am not a pediatrician, but one thing I can tell you is that you are not only taking the child into consideration, but the parents as well. There are different parenting styles, so you have to take that into consideration. You really have to think about if that is something you want to do, dealing with parents can be challenging. Other than that I think dealing with children and being a pediatrician is a great career. Alexa Dzubak

I am not a pediatrician, but I have been a pediatric nurse for several years. I work in a teaching hospital, so I work with interns all the way up to pediatric attendings. I will speak to what I see from the nurses perspective. Working in pediatrics is not just about working with the kids, but it is really family focused. It brings great joy to see and support a child and their family through a hospital admission/challenging diagnosis. It is also tough because the families are under a lot of stress. You also have to be ready to support the family and try to empathize with what they are going through. I briefly worked with adults and found that my heart was with the kids. When I was in high school I thought I wanted to be a pediatrician. I volunteered at a hospital and that is when I realized I wanted to be a nurse. Both are amazing and you can’t do your job without each other. The difference I found was how much time the nurse spent at the bedside compared to the doctor. The doctor typically sees the patient for a few minutes in the day. Their focus is figuring out the diagnosis and plan for all of their patients. They can’t stay at the bedside very long. As the nurse I am the one carrying out all of the orders and tending to the patient and families various needs throughout the day.

Pediatrics is very much like Veterinary Medicine especially Small Animal Practice because the patients are quite alike in that both infants and pets can't verbally communicate with the doctor. Often times the doctor has to obtain history from the parent of the child or the owner of the pet. Then the doctor has to observe the patient from a distance and then closely before carrying out a physical examination.
If you have cared for pets before or have taken your pet dog or cat to a veterinary clinic for a disease like Parvovirus gastroenteritis or feline pan leukopaenia requiring 7 to 10 days of hospital visits you would likely understand what it is to be a pediatrician.
Another way to bring more perspective is if you have taken care of a litter of puppies or kittens abandoned by their dams at an early age. Pediatrics is all about compassion and dedication to duty. Infants have developing livers and other organs that are not working at full capacity so drugs administered in such young patients need to be mild to avoid toxicosis or organ damage. Pediatrics is fun to do if you love to work with babies and can cope with cleaning their poop, urine and vomit or saliva.
you would need loads of love, patience, observation, innovation, compassion and empathy to be a pediatrician.
