Claire’s Answer

The PTCB website is a good resource for eligibility requirements and the application process. Here's a link: https://www.ptcb.org/credentials/certified-pharmacy-technician.

It's not a requirement to be a certified pharmacy technician; however, it does position you to be a candidate for more opportunities that are outside of traditional retail.

Dinah’s Answer

In my state of Illinois, you have to be the age of 18 to work in the pharmacy. I work with CVS as a pharmacy intern, but when I started as a technician I had two years to be nationally certified through PTCB. The pharmacy you get hired at may or may not pay for you to get tested, but the test is $129. So each state may have different requirements regarding on becoming a pharmacy technician.

Most companies now require a high school diploma or GED along with a certification that can be obtained through PTCB or NHA. Some retail pharmacies will offer on the job training for you to get your certification within 3-6 months. Some states also require you to register with them.

In addition to the answers below - California requires the National Certification for Pharmacy Techs in order to obtain the state pharmacy tech license. Currently most of the technician schools actually include this cost in their process.

Anthony’s Answer

Depends on your state. Where I went to school techs needed a license but where I live now nothing is required. To my understanding the states that do require licenses let you work for a certain amount of time before passing the exam. So it may be possible to begin working as a tech to see if you like the position and possibly even get your employer to pay for the certification and study materials.
