Tara’s Answer

I agree with all the answers here! My preference has been to opt to stretch out my pay over 12 months. That way there is always a steady stream of income, and I can relax without worrying about paying my bills.

My summers and breaks and extra days OFF during any given school-year are RELAXING. The absolute BEST JOB in the world to have is one that is on the work schedule of the local school district.

I was a secretary but went back to school for my degree in Education so that I could be off with my kiddos during the summer and I had always wanted to Teach. For me, it was a WIN WIN!!! Summers OFF??? They are the absolute BEST!!!

Derek’s Answer

I am not a teach but the entire running group I am part of are teachers. These individuals spend their summer mostly relaxing but picking up odd end jobs like painting houses or yard work to make additional money. They use to say "You can take the time off or utilize it for a second income to retire early". There was a mix of individuals that work and others that didn't.

My sister, also a teacher takes the time to pick up a second (summer job) to help supplement income. Based off, what I have experienced it is based on what you'd like to do with the 2-3months.

Andrew’s Answer

Katlin - Teaching is an extremely important profession but can be less rewarding financially based upon the situation. I am not a teacher, but my wife is and you will have a lot of decisions to make as mentioned by others (stretching out your pay over 12 months) and at times making tough financial decisions (borrowing your friends Netflix login and password). Summers can be a time to relax and recharge from shaping the minds of future generations, but also many opportunities exist for summer teaching assignments or as others other interests. Once you get some experience, it may open up more profitable opportunities in other school districts or schools. Talk to your teachers about their situation and consider if it applies to you. Thank you for the important work you are doing to become a teacher.

Some schools give you the option to stretch your pay out over 12 months. It means you get less each month, but, it doesn't force you to have to save up for summer. Of course you can still get a summer job!
