How to become an Interpreter?

I'm a 9th-grade high school student and ever since elementary school I've always wanted to become an Interpreter for ASL (American Sign Language) and other languages but I don't know what to really do besides reading books and watching videos to learn.

Hello,
I’m happy that you’re interested to be an interpreter to bridge a gap in communication. I have worked as an medical and social interpreter for people with limited English for many years. It’s a rewarding work and you bring a change in someone’s life by being a voice and helping them understand the conversation. I took a written and oral exam was certified by the state. I hope it’s similar for ASL (American Sign language) and might depend on the state. Please check your state’s health and human services website how to get certification and proceed with the process. Hope this helps
Good luck.

Hi!

Look into getting an undergraduate degree from an accredited university in Communication Sciences and Disorders. Most likely, the university that offers this degree teaches a Sign Language class as well as holds an American Sign Language club. From there, you can search for Interpreter jobs, and will be more likely to be hired with your degree!

Best of luck to you!
