Electrician is an excellent career choice, as the field continues to grow and there will always be a demand for the trade, with the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics showing a 7% growth outlook in the next decade.

The BLS always shows a median annual wage of $60,040, but this is highly relative, depending on location, experience, and your choice (would you be open to overtime, which would significantly impact your annual pay). In addition, I live in relatively rural area, with a low cost of living, and the standard rate of pay for a journeyman electrician (union) is $43/hr. This would equate to $89k/year.

As far as what they do, it comes down to what you want to do. There are infrastructure electricians (line men), residential and commercial new construction, repair electricians, and thousands of sub-occupations for those who want to enter into a specialty. There truly isn't a wrong direction to take in this field. Renewable energy is a type of sub-field for an electrician, which will continue to expand as the government demands stricter limitations on the use of fossil fuels.

Highly recommend contacting your local IBEW, which I was able to ascertain online as IBEW Local 332, 408-269-4332. They always have the most current information and can give you regionally specific direction on how to get started in the field.
