College Interview Advice?
I have a college interview coming up and was told to prepare questions. What are unique ideas of things I could ask, mostly pertaining to UCLA's music industry major? Also, do you have interview tips?

A college interview can be considered one of your first professional job interviews. As with a job interview, you will expect the interviewer to have questions for you and also to explain what they are looking for (not necessarily in that order!). A great candidate does not go in and assume the interviewer will hand everything to you on a platter. They want to know how you will fit into their culture and be successful. This is accomplished by you meeting your interviewer more than half-way.
What does that mean? It means to have done your research into the history of the school (in this case, UCLA), learn about who some of the prominent alumni are in your area of study and what they have done. Additionally, you should have more than a passing knowledge of the institution. The interviewer's job is to give you that information that only comes from being immersed in it , not given just because you are there; they want to know you can and will inquire about it (do you have the will and the skill to search for that which is not readily seen). You also want to establish a bond with your interviewer; it lets them know you see them as a person, not just a cog in the machine.
Remember, like a job interview, a college admissions interview is a two-way street: the college is reviewing if you will be an asset to their name and you are ensuring they will provide you the foundation to be successful in your post-schooling life.
In looking at some of the other answers, they have given you some great questions to base yours on. Following are some that I like to ask:
* What led you to choose to work here? (This gives the interviewer a moment to brag and offer insights into their view of the culture).
* How does the administration keep the curriculum and campus life relevant to today's society? (An inclusivity-style question).
* What is your favorite accomplishment you have been part of in your time here? (It's both a personal and organizational-level question)
* How have you seen the University change since you've been part of it? (Tie in to previous question but different approach)
* What is something you would like to see change that yet hasn't? (Flip-side of the last question to indicate nothing is perfect; it's a hard question - for the interviewer - so ask it if you feel comfortable with how the interview is going)
* What would you expect to be the greatest take-away I should expect from attending here? (They have your educational and personal history so have them impress you with what they know. If they say "A degree", then you better have a really great feeling after talking with the Music Department chairs or just love UCLA).
*As a parent, with experience of UCLA, why would you encourage your child to attend here? (Phrase it according to if they have said they have kids or not. This is where their pride in the institution will shine....or not.)
On the interview itself, dress professionally, unless you have thought it ask for a recommended dress code (yes, it IS ok to ask). I didn't one time and I was the only one in a suit and tie; everyone else was in business casual.

Interviewing can be a nerve wracking experience! One way to get beyond the nerves is to prepare and practice. Think about all of the experiences, work and practice, that got you to this point and then funnel that into clear, concise answers and examples. Then practice your answers. You don't want to sound rehearsed but you also want the interviewer to know that you are the best choice for the university!
This leads into the next tip for interviews: be yourself and show your passion. Don't give answers or present yourself in a way that you think they want you to be. You want a potential interviewer to see you for who you are and how you will fit into their organization. If you aren't what they are looking for, then maybe it isn't the right place or time for you.
Finally, asking questions shows your curiosity, passion and interest. Think about what is important to you and what you want to gain from being accepted to this school or what your overall goals are in the program. Then form those priorities into your questions.

Know the program. Know it beyond what the school tells people. Talk to alumni and understand what is really needed to get in the program and stay in the program. The people you talk to will be as excited about your experience as they will about how you will "fit" in the program by knowing the places, people, and things they do while in the program. One of the probable concerns is, "what are they going to do if we let them in." Don't act like you are in, but let them know what you will do if you do get in. Good luck!

My recommendation is to review job descriptions for the job you want to have when you graduate (look in LinkedIn). Hi Madison! A tip I learned back in college that I never forgot was to practice mock interviews with a partner. It could be your classmate, your friend or family member. Have your partner read you a small set of situational interview questions and you answer them. It would be super helpful for you to tape this on your phone as well so you can see yourself and your body language. Do not try to think of answers on the spot, write them down, practice them and then do your mock interview. After doing this multiple times, it will be smooth for the real thing. Practice does make perfect! Hope this helps!
