I am considering getting a degree in accounting because I like the flexibility of the career. I am right to think that? What are other benefits and negatives to accounting?

A great benefit of going into accounting is that you are not restricted to a geographic location! For example, many of my accounting friends work across Canada, the US, Europe, Australia and the UK! Many of the big accounting firms allow you to take secondments/exchanges to these places if you would like to try working in a new place.

I work in a public accounting firm in the audit (otherwise known as assurance) practice, and one of the factors I like most is the opportunity to meet new people constantly! I believe a lot of people have the impression that accounting is a very solitary job but I have not found that to be the case at all. Working in public practice accounting gives you the chance to learn about different industries and interact with clients at all levels, from the accounts payable clerk to the CFO.

Uttara’s Answer

Yes, accounting is a flexible career. You can work in public accounting, in audit, taxation, management consulting, etc. Or you can work in industry, as an accountant for practically any type of company. Or, you can set up a private practice to perform accounting services for individuals and small businesses. There are a lot of opportunities in this field.

Daniel’s Answer

I chose an accounting degree because accounting is at the core of every business. It is also the building blocks to financial statements. Pros: understand financial statements, business principles, own personal finances, flexibility, many job opportunities. Potential cons: heavy coursework, cyclical busy times of the year (e.g. monthly closes, quarterly & year-end financial statements preparation, audits)

Suzanne’s Answer

Hi Bianca - I completely agree with the others that responded. I chose an accounting major primarily because it is necessary for all businesses and provides you with a better understanding of how businesses work. Accounting can be flexible as far as job choice as you can be an accountant in any industry. What are your everyday interests? Do you like cars, fashion, sports, technology, finance? You can be an accountant or consultant in one of those industries! Think about ways to weave in what you are passionate about in the type of job you seek. Hope that helps! accounting careers flexibility
