Bhavna’s Answer

Hello Imani,
A surgical technician's main responsibility is to assist surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses in the operating room. Their duties may include preparing the operating room before surgery, setting up the sterile field, handing instruments to surgeons during the procedure, helping to count sponges and instruments and cleaning the operating room upon completion of the surgery.
I hope this helps. Good luck.

Crystal M.’s Answer

A surgical tech is responsible for ensuring sterility in the OR as well as that the right tools are available for each case. It is a very important job with alot of responsibility. You must be able to speak up in stressful situations even to a surgeon if needed because sterility was compromised. That can cause major problems for the patient, and you have to keep watch for it at all times in the OR.

Surgical Tech Here!

The most important part of any job in the medical field is patient safety! As Crystal was saying in her post, you are the sterility police in the OR. You set up and maintain a proper sterile field and maintain that sterile area to help fight against infections. Speak up to anyone if they have potentially contaminated themselves or others. The rule of thumb is "when in doubt, throw it out". After sterility then everything else is fundamental. Instruments, techniques, set up, drape, assisting, and anticipating, ect ect. I hope this helps.
