Ray’s Answer

To play soccer at the highest level, one needs to be exposed to professional level competition early on. In Europe, youths are constantly exposed to this type of competition in the youth academies. In the case of Messi, he's a generational talent, his ability to move with the ball, accelerate, and change of direction are simply unmatched. Even at his current age, he's quicker than most of the elite professional athletes. On top of that, he has perfected his crafts with training and hard work. You may or may not reach the level of success that Messi has reached, but you can certainly achieve success with hard work and dedication.

Deborah’s Answer

I like that you asked this question. It is good to understand success through analyzing other successful people's lives.

I read somewhere that a good leader is the last one to speak in the room. They listen and absorb and create a safe environment for others to speak, perform and then only respond. I have followed Messi's movements in the last world cup for a while and I also read one of the comments that stayed with me. A major part of what he does on the field is observing, he walks around on the field, understands players positions and is just watching.

Don't get me wrong he has put in the hours of work and commitment, but on D-day he is still learning! He is letting others show their cards before he can make a move. To me that is what makes him successful. He is learning while working and as a leader he is letting his team respond, while he figures out his own game plan.

Therefore, what I learned from him is, you need to step back, let the world around you play their cards, you learn real-time and then RESPOND INTELLIGENTLY to reach your goal (for him quite literally :))

Alexis - welcome to the village! I'm curious are you planning to pursue a pro footballer career? If so, I believe there're a few Q&A on that front too.
