Hi Emma, as a nursing leader I can inform you that each leader has a difference style of leadership/management. Research the 5 basic leadership styles of nursing. Identify which style suits you & ask other student nurses/professional nurses which style do they implement into their practice.

Eileen’s Answer

Management style in nursing really depends on several variables;

1. The type of unit you're working on (ER is managed much different than a medical unit simply due to the type of patient and throughput)
2. The length of time Nurse Manager has been in the role, (newer vs longer term Nurse Manager - some new are more engaged; some older managers are more understanding and sometimes the reverse is true. Best information comes from those who've worked on the unit).
3. In my nursing experience the management style of the unit is set by the Nurse Manager and carried forward by the Assistant Nurse Managers, (ANM's) - if the hospital system you're in has that level of management. Not all do. ANM's (if in place) can really make the unit hum and create the mileau for the shift they handle. Some of the best work on my past units was carried out by the strength and creativity, earnest efforts of ANM's.
