How long did it take you to become a forensic psychologist?

About how many years did it take you to become licensed/have the degrees necessary to become a forensic psychologist? Were you able to join as a forensic psychologist right away, or did you have to join a starter career and work your way up?

Thank you comment icon My dad is a retired forensic psychologist. He graduated Auburn University with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and it took him about 5 years to get hired by a company, because it is hard to fin d someone that is good at their job. So if you are good, it shouldn’t take long, but it just depends on experience. Will

Traci’s Answer

Depends on the avenue you want to take. If you want to do lab work, 4 year degree + additional 4 years of schooling.
If you wanted to work in law enforcement, 4 year degree + criminal justice degree.

Traci recommends the following next steps:

Narrow your field of interest (psychological, behavioral, lab sciences, etc.)

Hosnia’s Answer

The time it takes to become a forensic psychologist can vary dramatically between students, but most take about ten years following graduation from high school. Future forensic psychologists complete a four-year bachelor’s degree, two years for a master’s degree, and four-to-five years for their doctoral degree.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), psychologists earn a median salary of about $81,000 per year. Additionally, Payscale notes an average $73,381 salary for forensic psychologists.
