How can I begin to get experience in Marketing?

I want to start working while I'm in school in a job that will push me towards success in this field, and more importantly that I can push myself in, but I don't know where to start. #marketing

Stephen’s Answer

The nice thing about marketing is it is not limited to any particular field or service. *Any* product or service needs some kind of marketing. For example: here locally I offering marketing assistance to local musicians (bands, singers, songwriters) in promoting their events or new releases. Non-profits also require marketing in order to generate awareness for their org (fund raising events, general info) so maybe you can engage a local non-profit to see if they need some kind of assistance in their marketing plans. Assistance can be in the form of creating a message or engaging the local media.

Rob’s Answer

Connect with your community

Rob recommends the following next steps:

Local charities and not for profit are always looking for volunteers. I would encourage you to find one near your home or school and ask to meet with the director of development or associate director of development and explain to them what you are trying to do and your availability. Working at a not-for-profit will give you some insight into email marketing and event marketing campaign work most of these organizations do while on a shoe-string budget (assuming it is a social services or local charity without national funding).
