Excellent question Robyn. I became a dentist because I was good at and enjoyed making and repairing small things. I also enjoyed the sciences very much. Lastly, I wanted to be part of the health professions. I chose to be a general dentist because it allowed me to practice all aspects of dentistry. If I specialized in dentistry, I would be restricted to only that scope of practice and I enjoy all aspects of dentistry. As you go through Dental School you are exposed to all the specialties and that, along with shadowing in a variety of specialty offices, can help you decided what kind of dentist you want to be.

Amanda’s Answer

Hi Robyn,
I love that you are interested in dentistry. It has its challenges but it can be very rewarding if you are willing to work through them. I just graduated dental school three years ago. I've worked in several different types of practices, but for the most part a day would involve seeing and caring for patients with dental needs. The number of patients you see a day will vary depending on the practice you are at. I genuinely enjoy going to work and seeing my co workers, boss, and patients. I love working with my hands and applying what I learned from dental school to help people. Hope this helps!
