I can answer the first question. How long does it take to get into the film industry? You can get in almost immediately as an entry-level Production Assistant, or PA. Read more about PA work here: https://www.thebalance.com/production-assistant-1283465

How long and how much work does it take be a great director? The time it takes to "make it" as a household-name director varies greatly. And greatness takes practice. If you can watch great Directors on set, in action, you'll learn very quickly. (And from fair or poor Directors, you can at least learn what not to do.)

I took an excellent weekend class on directing with Peter D. Marshall, in which I heard, learned, and saw the value of cultivating trust on set -- especially the trust between the Director and each Actor. If your Actors know they are safe from bullying, micromanagement, and insults... if they know you have created a safe environment for them to play in and explore and take chances in... then they will show you amazing scenes, better than what you imagined.

Hope this helps!

Hi

The best way to get hired as a PA is to have a solid resume with film credits. Start out volunteering and working for cheap in order to get credits and then you will slowly be able to prove to the Producers or ADs hiring that you have set experience.

Check out this book I wrote that deals with that topic
