Samantha’s Answer

Hi June! Congratulations on knowing what career you want to pursue! I'm an accountant and I love the management and organization aspects of it, just like you seem to. The best way to become an accountant is to focus on getting your CPA (Certified Public Accountant) license. To get your license, you first need to complete your undergraduate college degree. The site below will help you understand any additional requirements based on the state you want to work in. For example, you might need to attain an additional number of credit hours before you can take the exam. Most people do this by obtaining a Master's Degree in accounting. Or, you might need to obtain an accounting job and get 1 year of experience before you can get your license. There is also a CPA exam that you have to study for and pass before you can get your license.

Best of luck in your career as an accountant!

Hi June!

I definitely agree with what Samantha and Kenneth said, especially when it comes to attending as many recruiting/networking events as possible at your school. I was able to get my foot in the door via my firm's Summer Leadership Program. It was a 1.5 day program where I got to network with individuals at the firm and do volunteer activities. Through the Summer Leadership Program, I was able to land an internship and ultimately a full time job offer.

Good luck working towards your career!

Kenneth’s Answer

Hi June,

I definitely agree with everything that Samantha has suggested above. I would also like to caution that being good at math is definitely a misconception when people think of accountants. All of us have calculators on our desks!

When recruiters come to your school, make sure you attend as many of these events as possible to get your face and name out there also!
