How difficult is it to play a sport and major in biology?

I'm asking, because I have committed to a D1 for softball and I will be majoring in biology. However, I'm terrified of the work load and wondering if it's even possible. I want to become an orthopedic surgeon. #medicine #sports-and-orthopedics

It is difficult to play and sport and major in a science, however, it is doable if you schedule correctly and make some personal sacrifices. I majored in Chemistry and ran track at a D2 school and the most difficult classes to schedule are the labs. Labs tend to take more time out of your day, however, if you communicate with your coach, you may be able to work out separate lifting times, etc, that would enable you to continue your studies. Finally, you will have to sacrifice some weekends in order to get ahead in your classes to avoid missing assignments during games. Because several of your teammates will likely be in a similar situation, get together with a few and keep each other accountable on assignments.

As the classes get more difficult, make sure that you are spending adequate time studying and utilize tutors the school will offer even if you don't think you need one. One final tip, make friends in your biology classes with someone who does not play sports and takes good notes. When you are traveling, you will miss classes and crucial notes and deadlines. Communicate with your professors and go to the office hours with notes from another student and questions for the professor to help you review. Overall, as long as you are focused, you absolutely can major in Biology and play a sport. Good luck!
