What are potential career paths for a Management Information Systems bachelors degree?

I would like to start a sustainable social business but I do not know exactly what I want to do yet except help people and the environment! Technology is used in practically every field so I feel as if this would be a good major. #business #sustainability #sustainable-development #sustainable-business #technology #mis

Ryan’s Answer

Hi Skylar,

A MIS degree provides you with a solid foundation in technology, business, and management principles, making it a versatile choice for those interested in pursuing a sustainable social business. As you mentioned, technology is used in virtually every field, giving you ample opportunities to explore various career paths that align with your passion for helping people and the environment.

With an MIS degree, you can consider roles that involve designing, implementing, and managing information systems to address real-world challenges. For instance, you could work on developing technology solutions to improve access to healthcare, education, or other essential services in underprivileged communities. Similarly, you might focus on creating information systems supporting sustainable agriculture practices, waste management, or renewable energy.

Alternatively, you could explore careers in data analysis or business intelligence, using your skills to collect, analyze, and present data that informs decision-making in organizations focused on social and environmental causes. Your expertise in data-driven insights can help drive effective strategies and optimize the impact of these organizations.

Another option is to pursue a career in project management or IT consulting, working with non-profit organizations, social enterprises, or government agencies to implement technology solutions that address societal and environmental challenges. This path allows you to leverage your technology and management knowledge to bring about meaningful change.

Understanding the technology landscape is one thing, managing it is another, but creating the ability to apply both is where change really happens.

Michele’s Answer

Hi Skylar. I obtained my undergraduate degree in MIS from the UofA in the late 90s. It was unbelievable launch pad for what has turned out to be a multifaceted career across numerous industries. If you are interested in the intersection of technology (MIS degree) and environmental activism, I suggest you look into Environmental, Social, and Governance reporting (ESG). ESG reporting and government regulations around ESG reporting are evolving rapidly. The use of technology to help companies understand the impact of their organization in their communities and the wider world is only going to increase in demand. Using technology for ESG reporting can help companies understand their current impact, which in turn allows them to identify areas for improvement.

Hello skylar G.! First of all, your passion is very inspiring! Help people and the environment is really important!

In order to understand your career paths possibilities, you should consider an internship with a corporation that is socially and environmentally responsible. I'm proud to say that I work for one of those companies - Dell Technologies, so it would be one possibility to consider (you can find more about it here: http://www.dell.com/learn/us/en/uscorp1/undergraduate-students ).

I got a MBA in MIS after a got a Marketing under graduate degree. My career was in IT consulting and account management/sales.
