If you are in High School, see if a local community college will let you take classes while you are in High School. This could be free to you, and you can get some credits on general subjects out of the way before you even start a formal college education. You might also want to consider getting your EMTB (Emergency Medical Technician - Basic) from a community college during your summer break, that will give you an advantage applying to nursing school or applying for a first job in healthcare. As far as the simplest thing to do to prepare for a degree in nursing, what I have routinely seen is how quickly people forget basic mathematic principles, it seems to be "use it or lose it". Learn the basics well, and exercise your brain with the basics, and you will never regret that. Automation seems to have solved so many things for nurses, but when the lights go out (equipment failure) we have to revert to paper and pencil, and that is when heroes emerge.
