You can get an associates in nursing and the program itself is two years, however, there will be pre-requisite classes that will add additional time. You can then get your RN license and work on your bachelors online while you're working as a nurse. Or, you can do a four year BSN program that is structured more like a traditional four year degree. It is worth comparing different programs in your area and the prices for doing it each way. Personally, I did an ADN program and started working as a nurse as soon as I could and I do not regret that. I started my BSN online a couple of months after I graduated and only took a couple of classes a semester so it wasn't too bad.
Nursing is a great career if you want flexibility. You can choose so many different specialities and you can do any type of shift you want, 12s, 10s, or 8s. You can always do something different and have a completely different job. I started in the OR but I've also done clinical research and I'm now starting a new job as a detox nurse! All of these jobs are completely different and that is what's great about nursing.

Nursing is a great job to do because it is done out of love, you give your best for the patients to feel relieve from any pain they might be going through. We reassure patients and give them reason to strive on for health. It is human investment and this can never be replaced by machines. Choosing a nursing career is choosing what you love to do for as long as you'd wish to care for people.

Nursing is a very rewarding career and one degree certifies you to work in literally hundreds of different environments. Nurses are needed everywhere from clinics and hospitals to corrections facilities and corporations. Nurses can work for insurance companies, helping patients get authorized for procedures or experimental medications or work in legal offices as legal nurse consultants and expert witnesses. There are even forensic nurses that work in labs that process crime scenes.
Some nurses own their own companies...from life-saving training facilities to aesthetic spas, designing charting systems, travel nurse recruiting companies to mobile IV therapy and infusion services, nurses are driving more and more of the businesses associated with health care.
I love the work-life balance I have as a nurse. Working 3 12-hour shifts allows me to essentially have a one-week vacation every other week, if that's what I want to do. For me, work-life balance is excruciatingly important. When you spend so much of your time caring for others, you have to have time to take care of yourself. And while I believe you should work hard and be dedicated, you shouldn't live to work. You should work to live. And really live! (I've often joked about how hard it is for me to fit work into my social calendar!)
My experiences in the ER, ICU, critical access and inpatient dialysis have allowed me to get into travel nursing and serve populations and demographics I wouldn't have had the opportunity to serve otherwise. As a result, my spirit has been enriched by immersing myself in other cultures, learning from them and finding a whole new respect. I am truly humbled.
There are a myriad of ways to be a nurse. You can get your license in Arizona and, if you should decide to move, your unencumbered license is transferable to any one of the compact states with very little paperwork and a nominal fee.
Nursing can be very rewarding and is a sure way to obtain financial security in a world that is becoming more and more automated. Best of luck!
