Fred gave a good breakdown of the timeline to becoming a surgeon. It takes a lot of time and hard work to become a doctor, and more training to become a surgeon. However, all of that schooling is to make sure you have the most amount of knowledge possible so you can safely provide the best care possible to your patients. It's a lot of hard work but is extremely rewarding.

My understanding (and I am not a doctor)
high school - 4 years
undergraduate degree - 4 years
Med school - 4 years
Surgical training - 5 years
Pediatric surgery fellowship - 2 years.
There are schools where you can combine your undergraduate and med school into six years instead of eight.
And all this is to be able to practice on your own. Obviously for many of those years you will be doing surgery under the supervision of another surgeon.
