What are some good fields of engineering to enter into to provide opportunities to work abroad?
I love to travel and would love to live abroad and see as much of the world as possible while I'm still young and ideally I would like to do that working as an engineer. #engineering #travel #civil-engineering

All types of engineering provide you the ability to work abroad. The best is arguably civil engineering. Many large civil firms have offices in many countries and it can be fairly easy to transfer between them. Also look into Engineers Without Boarders.

Civil Engineering provides a great background for foreign work. There is great need for infrastructure improvements, especially in Third World countries. Civil. Eng. will give you the best skills for this types of work. Prior to trying for a job Overseas, I recommend that you spend at least two years in the US with a Civil consulting firm. This will allow you to gain some practical experience in fields such as sanitation, water supply and roads. It will also introduce you to very important concepts of project management....organizing and carrying a project through to completion. If you work for a large firm, there may be in-house opportunities to work at offices in other countries.
I very much SECOND the suggestion in a separate response that you should get involved with Engineers without Borders. The organization allows both students of engineering professionals to get directly involved in small-scale infrastructure projects in many Third-World countries. There hundreds of college chapters and professional chapters in the US, so you should have no trouble finding one near you. Plus this type of activity looks very good on your resume.

Hi Gibbs B. I see that you posted this question a little while ago so I hope my answer to you (or others who may read this response) is still helpful.
In addition to the awesome advice that has already been provided, you can also consider working for a multi-national company in the area of data networks. Data networks are the means by which information flows across a business. Recognize that this information must flow, regardless of whether the information resides within the same state or across the borders of a country.
I once had a role as a data network engineer that allowed me to do quite a bit of travel. In that role, I not only got to learn about the importance of data, information, privacy and security but every now and then, I got a chance to experience the environment outside, which was great particularly when my work allowed me to travel internationally.
Safe travel and best of luck to you!
