How can I become an activist in my community/school?

I want to be more engaged in my school and community but more specifically in my field of study. I am a poly sci major minoring in environmental studies and want to eventually work for a non-profit organization. I've tried applying online but living in San Francisco makes it difficult to make myself different from the other students looking for internships or just volunteer opportunities. If someone could give me tips on how to engage or put myself more out there that would be great!

Thank you
Aleena

What does make you different from other students? What do you have to offer? Look for smaller organizations that intersect with your interest, and craft a personal letter, explaining why you like them, why you want to help, and what you can do. Don't just fill out applications- give them a call, or walk over in person and say, hi, how can I help? Whatever it is they have to do, do it, even if it seems boring or trivial. Go to open meetings or forums, ask people about what they do and if they need help doing it- offer your services. Treat it like a job interview and be prepared. Good luck!

There are a tremendous number of volunteer opportunities at non-profits.  They may not be exactly in your field but you could build up your resume by demonstrating that you are flexible and have worked with a wide variety of people.  Serve a meal to the homeless, be a pen pal to someone in prison, etc. You can find opportunities online at volunteermatch.

With every good wish!

Angela’s Answer

Hi Aleena:

Start with your college/university, there are multiple student clubs or organizations focused on politics and/ or the environment. You will find like-minded students and if you choose to, can take a leadership role within the club. They usually have projects or relationships with community organizations/businesses and will give you opportunties to interact with professionals in the fields you are interested in.

Good luck,

angela
