Carri’s Answer

Hi Katherine! It’s great that you’re interested in pediatric surgery. It’s an awesome specialty. To become a pediatric surgeon, you will get a bachelor’s degree (usually 4 years), and then go to medical school which is also 4 years (unless you decide to get a PhD as well, then it would be 8). After medical school, you will complete a 5-year residency in general surgery for adults. Once you are a trained surgeon, you can apply to a fellowship in pediatric surgery, which is 2 years long. So a total of about 15 years of school/training. After that, you can apply to be a board-certified pediatric surgeon! The average salary of a general surgeon in the US is about $422,397, and the average salary of a pediatric surgeon in the US is $482,139.
