Is is best to follow passion or logic?

I know people always say to do a job that you love, but wouldn't it be wise to take the job that makes more money so that you can do what you love on the side? When considering what to choose for my major, I keep struggling with what I want to do, and what would help me more financially. #college-major #career-decisions #passion #finance

Laurel,

I have found that the most successful and happy people are those that have followed their passion. I know it is certainly true for me.

Best of luck in your pursuit of passion.

This is a great question that many people have. My advice would be to do what you love to do. Follow your career aspirations, but if you feel that it may be a risk financially (which is great that you are able to recognize and think thata way) then you should have a back up plan.

I have a friend who's dream is to be an author. Knowing that its a tough industry to break into she took english classes and did accounting in college. She currently works in accounting but finds time to write on the side. Although she is starting to get recognized in the writing world, she has a back plan in case she needs one financially.

I always think you should follow your dreams, if you are passionate enough about what you do you will always find success. However it is always good to have a back up plan.

I think this is an excellent question. I personally have always wanted to be a guitar player or in a successful band. I have been in an alternative rock band since I was 14 and am still in a band to this day. That being said, I think it is important to set yourself up well for the future. I find that it is very doable to have my accounting job as my main profession and to still practice and play gigs with my band. That being said, if my band were to ever take off big and need to tour etc. I would have a tough decision to make. Choosing a logical career that is always in demand helps for when you want to take off on band tour (or whatever your passion is) and then, if it doesn't work out, come back to a steady job.
Whatever you do, never give up your passions. Even if/when you choose a "logical" profession, it is important to maintain your hobbies and passions.

Absolutely follow what you love! The more you love what you are doing the more successful and happy you will be in life! But that doesn't necessarily mean you have to be financially stuck. Think about what it is that you love, and how you can incorporate that in different careers. Let's say for example you love art. Perhaps while trying to sell your own art you can also pursue a career in art therapy or with a high end construction company designing their custom marble! There are many ways in which you can use your strengths, get creative!
