You can start at home with your own compost bin! I have two at my home - one that's a barrel that you turn; and another that's a worm farm. Frankly, I have had more success with the worm farm compost bin, which I purchased from my community waste management company. I would suggest searching online in your community for a similar program. Most communities have one because it helps keep food waste out of the landfill.
I save all of my vegetable and food scraps from cooking and place them in a food container in my freezer (that way there is no smell and no ants or flies are attracted to it). Once the bin is full, I take it out to the worm farm and empty the contents in the top level, where the majority of the worms are. After a few months, there is a rich, dark fertilized soil that forms at the bottom of the worm farm. I harvest the soil and spread it around my potted garden and plants. They love it!
