How will you know if going to an Art College is the best choice for you?

i grew up in poverty , and struggled with getting the things I wanted in life. So when I was young my mother used to tell me"pick a job that actually be secure in the future.'' I love art, but I dont want to be a starving artist. #help #art #college #college-major

Shadey’s Answer

Hi Josiah!

This is a great question. I completely understand your concern. I am a first-generation college student and my parents are both immigrants to this country, so I definitely felt the pressure to choose a field that would allow me a secure future.

In my opinion, you should follow your heart. If art is your passion, go for it! However, I also understand the importance of job security. My recommendation would be to study art and another field of interest that would guarantee a more secure job. Doing both would allow you to do what you love while having the security of a field that is more stable. Teaching art is always an option if you like working with young people!

Also, remember that what you choose to study in college does not dictate the job you will have once you graduate.

Best of luck!

John’s Answer

I would encourage you to consider a career in design. There are a lot of different types of design from industrial (designing hardware ), User experience (Visual and interaction design for digital products), packaging, ect. Design is a field that is in very high demand, and very much art influenced. Look into degrees such as, human computer interaction, interaction design, industrial design, graphic design or anything similar.

Marilyn’s Answer

I completely agree with the previous answer. Sometimes business or education is a good direction. That way you can pursue art on the side. I worked in the schools for 32 years before I retired and now went into a career in art. Best of luck,
