Is it possible to become an astronaut with a mechanical engineering degree?

There doesn't seem to be as many jobs in aerospace engineering as there is in mechanical engineering but my ultimate goal would be to become an astronaut. #engineering

Thank you comment icon There are more jobs in the Mechanical Engineering field since this type of engineering is fairly broad. Since you are interested in being an astronaut, I would recommend studying aerospace engineering because they're are still plenty of career opportunities in that field. Mariah

Hi Scott,

I suggest reading about people who are currently in the Astronaut program and looking at their background. And, since becoming an astronaut is extremely competitive, you may want to consider what other opportunities will be open to you if you need a plan B.

No it is not a requirement, but I would look at NASA to see what the requirements are. Usually aviation experience is preferred but I am not sure if it is a requirement as there are many different roles that astronauts can play. However science and mathematics would be subjects of focus
