Business or health care management
I really like both majors and I'm interested in both but I feel as though my family is pushing me towards Health Care management and I don't want to decide my future based on only what they want for me rather than what I will be happy doing #business #healthcare-management

In some schools, the healthcare management program is within the business schools so many of the courses are also business classes. The difference between healthcare management and business is miniscule if you want to purse healthcare management. We recommend that you just choose a concentration in business that you like (operations, information systems, etc.) and you can still pursue healthcare management as a career afterwards with your skillset. Many people in that field have varying majors (biology, business, healthcare management, etc.) and you can definitely break into the field if you choose either major. Also, it's important to remember to not put too much weight on your undergraduate degree as you can always pursue one field or the other in your master' after having a better idea of which field fits you best! However, be more careful about choosing your master's degree. Be intentional about what career path you want to be on and choose the master's that fits best. Think also about flexibility of career paths with a MBA vs. other degrees (ie. MPA).

Hello Kaitlyn,
Great to see you are down to choosing between business and health care management; you should be excited you have narrowed to that level of interest! As others have stated, management skills in general are transferrable so regardless of the specific field and area you land on, you will be able to use your skills. I would recommend you think about what you like about each area, what is motivating to you, what can you envision yourself doing in each area. Then ask if there is anything you dislike or doesn't seem to align with your strengths, interests, etc. Sometimes a good T listing helps me organize my thoughts when making decisions like this one. I would also recommend talking to some of your professors and if there is a guidance resource available; ideally people who know you and know your work and give you suggestions or ideas to consider. Good luck in your future endeavors!

The healthcare landscape is rapidly changing and there are (and will always be) lots of opportunities and positions available to you should you choose that route. At the end of the day, management is management and having additional healthcare knowledge would be to your advantage. There's nothing stopping you from pursuing any business management position with a health care management degree. The titles are different, but the underlying skill-sets are the same .

Both are great! I have a degree in Healthcare Administration and found that it is very similar to the Business degree requirements. I will say that both degrees offer the same type of training that is transferrable across many lines of business. If you are leaning towards a career in the medical field, the Healthcare Administration degree does include classes on medical ethics and compliance which has turned out to be extremely valuable in my career. Good luck on your future endeavors!

I have my MHA, because I was already working in healthcare; however, your MBA can go much further and in any direction as it is not specific to only one field. If I had to do it over again, I would get my MBA instead. Most importantly, I would support and encourage you to follow the path you want to take as opposed to following the one your family wants. This is your career, your life and you have to be the one to decide how to move forward.

The Medical field is a business especially for a hospital or elder care facility so I would recommed pursuing both to advance your career. This field is exploding thanks to new medicine and the pursuit of cures for new diseases such as Covid 19. In fact I can't think of a more popular career right now as the business degree will come in handy in dealing with budget and supply chains and healthcare management is one of the fastest growing segments in the labor market with a medical vernacular that you can master in school. You are definitely on an excellent track!!
