Is it true that there is going to be or is a shortage of pilots?
I keep hearing from family, friends, etc that there is going to be or is a shortage of commercial pilots, just wondering if the demand is actually as severe as the truth.

Hi Nathan,
There is definitely a shortage of professional pilots across the globe, and it seems to just be starting. In many parts of the world like China, India, and the Middle East it is due to tremendous growth and a shortage of qualified pilots to fly all the aircraft on order, and here in the U.S. it is mainly due to the tremendous number of retirements occurring in the next decade, as well as for some growth. However, you never know when that growth may stall and the economy takes a breather, so theres no guarantee that there won't be some turbulence along the way. If it is something you think you'd be interested in, I would definitely look into it. Not for the future prospects, which may be very bright, but simply because it can be a fun and rewarding career with lots of varied opportunities.

Given the substantial number of jet orders pending with Airbus and Boeing, there's undoubtedly going to be a significant shortfall in the required number of pilots. If you're willing to expand your perspective, you'll find more lucrative opportunities with better quality of life in regions outside the USA. However, you'll need to be culturally astute to adjust, unless you're already familiar with those cultures. Best of luck!

Yes, Nathan. The aviation industry needs commercial pilots as soon as posible. We have lack of proffesionals in this field. If you want to study to get your commercial pilot certification, go ahead. This is the time to do that. Good luck.

I agree 100% with Martin's answer.
All of the US carriers are looking at ab initio training programs to fill the rapidly draining supply of qualified pilots. When I broke into this world in the 60's, there was a glut of pilots. Not so today.
One thing to keep in mind. Even with the expanding opportunities out there, it will still take an abiding love of the profession to reach success. Financial rewards, although very promising, should not be the force behind the pursuit of this career path. Be the best you can be academically and always strive to perfect your flying and people skills.
