Advice for third-year electrical engineering student interested in pursuing audio/DSP careers?

I am a third-year EE student with good understanding of circuit analysis, time and frequency domain analysis of signals, and system analysis, and am educating myself on music production (mixing and mastering). I plant to obtain my master's degree within the next 2 or 3 years. Any words of wisdom for someone wanting to pursue a professional career in audio?

I second the advice above -use every opportunity to get a hands-on experience: coops, internships, research internships. Usually this area of hardware favors Masters Degree over simply Bachelors.

Hi Nathan. My words of wisdom are to get as much experience as you possibly can. While you are in school, find somewhere to intern or even volunteer. The music industry quickly becomes about proving yourself. Strive for excellence every time you show up at the studio, live events, whatever it may be. Also don't limit yourself. You want to learn about music production. That is awesome, but it is hard to get your foot in the door. Don't be scared to start in something outside of that. Maybe try live events. It is much easier to find a production company you can freelance for. Get experience mixing, even if it is live. It will all boil down to the experience you have. My encouragement to you is to not give up. The great thing about the industry is that if you want to learn something new or move up, all you have to do is prove yourself. They don't care about where you come from or what you have done, but they do care about what you can do and about the potential they see. Good luck!
