What are some of the most lucrative and/or rewarding entry level positions in the Information Technology field?
I am currently taking IT courses in Boston. I just started the program about a month ago and am starting to get curious as to what are some of my options after this course is over. I definitely want to continue my education, however I am not sure what field I want to go into specifically IE computer science, computer engineering. What are some of the most lucrative or enjoyable entry level positions in the IT field? I'd like to get my professional career started. #computer-science #information-technology #computer-networking

When you say rewarding, I'll assume you are referring to high salary. I will assume you already find IT work fulfilling so now you want to direct yourself onto a track where the big bucks are.
1) Database Administrators (DBA) make serious dough. You can also expand into the DevOps / AppEngineering space as an application DBA. Good salary but demand is not as big as it once was - still good choice
2) IT Infrastructure Specialty Engineering. Not talking about the everyday OS SysAdmin, I am referring to Storage Engineers, Virtualization Engineers, IT Architects. these are not entry level roles but positions you gravitate to within an IT Organization after you spend time training and studying so you have the knowledge to get on one of these high-end teams
3) Cloud Engineers/Architects. Everything is going to the/a cloud - especially within large organizations as they want to develop their own internal hybrid clouds.
there are a lot more but these are a few that can bring in 6-fig fairly easy. A lot of this will depend on how far down the rabbit hole you like to go. Do you want to be deep in the grass and develop code as a Software Engineer/Developer or do you lean more to more holistic disciplines like Storage or Cloud where you are managing a major platform that supports 1000s of applications with hundreds of thousands of users. the bigger the stakes, the bigger the check.

Hello David,
Thank you so much for the question. The least you can do in this field would be tech support for a call center or a cable company this would be people calling in for help with any type of devices all the way from cell phones to computer printers hardware, or trouble signing on the computer etc. Also, refurbishing computers is an option to help a person to speed up the performance of his or her computer so they do not have to go out and purchase any new devices. Repairing, in an office store, or a geek squad for a local place that does hire entry level techs. This field has much information that can overwhelm an individual so hang in there and try to focus on one part of the field that may interest you. If you are the creative type and you like gaming, graphics may be for you. Website development. There are so many options for you in the computer field, I would suggest writing down the like and dislikes of the field the pros of what direction you may want to go in, and the cons of that same field. That may help you make good decisons so you do not have to back track or redo or retake courses. If you think that this field is too broad for you, you may want to consider a change like working in business with logistics, and or computers are in all or most offices now. Admin, human resources, development. Project Management, marketing all use software programs and may be a focus for you. I hope this has helped you. If you have any more questions always happy to help!

Only you can answer what is most rewarding. Some of the most in demand fields currently in IT are Security and Big Data. These come with big paychecks but would that be rewarding for you? I don't know. Other areas to consider are networking, software engineering, data center, cloud computing. Do a little research and figure out what goes best with your personality.
