Craig’s Answer

It’s important to note that networking amongst the local fleet is important. Typically you will be fishing out of a harbor where other boats leave from. It’s crucial that you establish a solid working relationship with them. You don’t have to be close buddies, but you have to at least be friendly and open to offering your expertise and knowledge to help them succeed. The best way is to be open with any information you may have that could help them. You do that and they will help you when you need it.

When it comes to fishing I used all the technology I could get my hands on. I also wanted to maximize all equipment I had on the boat. Many captains only know the very basics of their equipment and miss out on the benefits they bring.

I also was involved in local fishing forums where I shared my information. While most don’t like to be bothered by them, having a good relationship with private boaters can help you locate fish.
All information is helpful, knowing where guys have tried without catching is as valuable as those who did catch.

A lot of my knowledge came from my experience and knowing the typical migration paths salmon and albacore take. I was very bold and would take information from satellite imagery and know exactly where I could find the proper water conditions to fish. That was the best part of being a captain, to put the fleet on the fish. Watching the horizon and seeing boats headed your way. It was an ego stroke and I got off on it.

I don’t have the time to finish this up but there is a ton more to say. I’ll come back later this week and try to write even more. fishing captain
