Jobs outside of Big4 accounting?

I am pursuing an accounting degree from a top target school. However, I do not want to do audit or tax. Are there any other careers outside of traditional accounting that I can pursue with an accounting degree?

Hi Kia! Firms (even the big 4) have an advisory/ consulting practice. It is the third line of service, with the other two being tax and audit. With an accounting degree, you can look into the advisory practice e.g. there is a forensic services practice that may be of interest to you and a good fit.

Hey Kiat! There are many other job opportunities within the big 4 that aren't in the traditional tax/audit category most people think such as consulting or advisory positions. I work within Risk Assurance which focuses on addressing companies internal controls and ensuring they are properly mitigating identified risks. I would recommend talking with professionals from different places to hear more about their experiences and figure out what you are most interested in.

Hi Kiat,

There are many opportunities for those with accounting degrees wishing to not pursue audit or tax. All businesses require some type of accounting function to run its business. I realize the title of the question is 'Jobs outside of the Big4 accounting', but I think your biggest concern is not doing audit or tax. As mentioned by the other commenters, there are many other opportunities within the Big 4 that do not involve audit or tax. I would suggest trying to get an internship somewhere to get some experience to determine what suits your needs and fits best.

Hi Kiat,

I like your question! I would suggest you to think what you would like to do and try to explore what you want to pursue in a long term. Please also remember that you'll need to adjust your plan along the way if you do not think you like it or want to try some others! For example, my friend likes accounting and law/ regulation. She did some research online and try to see if there is a career combining both of them. Also she asks her professors and friends surrounding by then she noted many public accounting firms offer "forensic accounting" service line. She applies it through college internship programs and she likes it now! So please keep exploring and find out what is offered in this real world. Hope this helps!

Hi Kiat,

There are definitely many other career opportunities you can pursue with an Accounting degree. Big 4 firms have Advisory practices, which are more consulting based in specialized fields. For example, PwC's Advisory line of service specializes in forensic accounting, valuation, mergers and acquisitions, and much more! You also can go into Finance roles at certain Companies with an Accounting degree. It just takes a little extra research when recruiting but is definitely doable!

An accounting degree can give you access to many areas. There are absolutely places outside of the Big4 that you can go to with that degree. You just need to figure out what type of business you want to be in. Technology, finance, insurance, entertainment, manufacturing, retail, government, non-profit, pretty much anything because EVERY business, whetther they are global or a small local company, needs someone to do the tracking and reporting. The key is finding something that interests you and then using your skills and contacts/network to help you find those companies and opportunities.
Good Luck!

Hi Kiat, there are tons of opportunities for non-big4 Accountants out there. Businesses big and small within any industry need financially literate people to help them. Individuals with accounting degree can pursue careers in Finance, Economics etc. Look into opportunities with various sects of the government or even Forensic Accounting with the FBI.
