Hi Justin. Thanks for submitting this question!

Whether you want to work inside or outside of an office, employers will focus on the skills you either already have or the skills you are willing to learn. How comfortable are you using computers? If I were a betting person, I would think that using computers is a no-brainer for you..since most of us have smartphones that are like mini-computers :).

If it is true that you are comfortable using computers then the next thing for you to assess for yourself is how good are you at taking and following instructions? Many businesses, whether they are big or small, have specific ways of doing business. This can range from how they fill out sales sheets, to how they generate new business, to how they compensate their employees. So demonstrating that you know how to follow directions will be a big plus.

How comfortable are you at creating new ideas? For sure, businesses need employees who know how to follow directions. Chances are that once an employee demonstrates that they can follow directions and provide good results, businesses will look at that employee to begin to create better ways of doing things. After all, once you demonstrate that you can follow the business rules, you will have also demonstrated that you know what those rules are. A good use of time would be to understand how things are done and maybe think of ways to make things run better, faster to improve results.

These are just a few ideas that I hope you find helpful as you seek and find the type of job that will work for you. Best of luck!

Justin, be sure you have great computer skills - fast keyboarding, MS Office apps, a general knowledge of operations, accounting, and administration. Not all businesses are run the same, so find one that does something that interests you. For me, when I was starting out, I worked as an assistant in an advertising agency and it was one of the most enjoyable jobs I ever had. I learned a lot from everyone at all levels, and it taught me a lot about working styles, empathy, change management and pressure.

Good luck! Keep us posted!

I started working in offices by registering with a Temp agency. Kelly Services, Manpower, and People Connection are just a few. You'll interview and take some tests, so don't lie about what you know. Registering with an agency is free, so if you sign up with more you'll have better chance at finding work.
