Public Health is an expansive field. You should look into what social determinants of health are and you will be amazed at how far public health reaches. This is what gets me excited about public health!

In the US, many public health professionals do not have a medical degree. I recently graduated with my Master of Public Health and have not regretted it! I enjoyed the curriculum and am so glad I got my degree! My program at UNTHSC even has a ton of international students so there may be opportunities for your situation!

I agree with Jasmine and George. A degree in human anatomy will be helpful for public health. Have you looked into master’s degree programs in public health? Most programs in the United States are two years full time, but many allow students to study part-time while also working. I am not familiar with public health degree programs internationally, but there are probably several options.

Simi’s Answer

Hi Sunday, just like others have said, public health is quite broad! Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Health Policy, Healthcare management, Global health and Behavioral science are some of the possible specialties you could pursue as a public health professional. Questions that could help you decide which direction you want to go include whether you prefer research vs working in industry, what groups of people you'd prefer to work with, and what skillsets you have or would like to develop (eg qualitative or quantitative).
As someone who practiced public health in Nigeria without a medical degree, I would encourage you to look into health NGOs and development partners in the country. Many of them have internship opportunities that are a great springboard for a career in public health. Hope this helps!

Gloria’s Answer

Like others have said, Public Health is a very broad field, it depends on how you want to apply your interests and degree. I would suggest connecting with people in Nigeria who are doing work that you're interested in and learn from them how you can become involved in learning or work opportunities.

George’s Answer

It seems to me that a solid education in a field like Human Anatomy should help you find your way to a Public Health position. You may also need familiarity with Statistics and Research Methods. Public Health is a broad field and may involve so many subjects that can affect a human population that needs to be documented properly. I have reviewed some types of positions in the area of Public Health like, for example, in the state of Michigan. Take a look at this in the Internet and you may find some of the answers you are looking for. Good luck!

Jasmine’s Answer

Hello! Public health is an extremely broad field. What are some specific areas you are interested in? Having a background in Human anatomy opens you up for many possibilities. I would advise creating a list of topics you are interested in such as disease prevention, health and wellness, or policy making and go from there. You can also look into universities that accept international students to broaden you options. good luck!
