Luke’s Answer

Switching to a new technology can be challenging, but it is possible to land an entry-level job as an iOS developer with the right skills and approach. Here are some steps you can take to increase your chances of getting an iOS developer job:

1. Learn iOS development: You need to have a solid understanding of iOS development, including programming languages like Swift and Objective-C, Xcode, and iOS frameworks. Taking online courses and tutorials can help you learn these skills.
2. Build a portfolio: Create a portfolio of iOS apps that you have developed to showcase your skills to potential employers. This will help demonstrate your experience and expertise in iOS development.
3. Attend networking events: Attend iOS development meetups, conferences, and other networking events to meet other professionals in the industry and learn about job opportunities.
4. Apply for internships or apprenticeships: If you are having trouble landing an entry-level job, consider applying for internships or apprenticeships to gain hands-on experience and make connections in the industry.
5. Create a LinkedIn profile: A LinkedIn profile can help you connect with potential employers and showcase your skills and experience.
6. Tailor your resume and cover letter: Highlight your relevant skills and experience in your resume and cover letter, and tailor them specifically to the iOS developer job you are applying for.
7. Be persistent and proactive: Finding an entry-level job can be challenging, so be persistent and proactive in your job search. Keep applying to jobs and attending networking events, and don't give up.

Nadzeya’s Answer

Luke had a great answer, but want to share my experience! I had a similar situation once as I was working as a backend engineer but decided to change to iOS Developer. I could share my experience:
1. I didn't do any courses and learned everything myself by creating a project and publishing it in AppStore. It took me around 2-3 months of actively working on that.
2. Improved CV, in my CV I've highlighted my overall engineering experience and achievements in IT. Of course, didn't forget to describe iOS Stack and added there my app (GitHub/AppStore links).
Although back then Objective C was quite popular, I bet my future on Swift. For now, I would suggest focusing on Swift UIKit but also learning SwiftUI, because that is something that is very actual for now!
3. I've also updated my Linkedin profile, so it is clearly seen that I'm identifying myself as an iOS engineer.
4. Before starting to look for a job. I've read articles that prepared me for interviews: most common questions and tasks
5. I've tried to apply to the all desired positions, even though some of those were higher than entry-level. I made sure to add a cover letter to every application that was adjusted for the corresponding position
6. Eventually I found a great first place to work as a Junior iOS engineer :)

Hopefully, that helps!
And I wish you good luck!

Rafeh’s Answer

Make a solid resume. Put in it your 4 years of IT experience. Look at an iOS Developer's resume. Look at job descriptions that you are applying for and double check that in your resume. Watch iOS Development videos on YouTube, and prepare for the interview when the time comes. Keep trying. Hope for the best but expect the worst. Pour your heart in iOS Development. If there is a discord, and definitely there are, for iOS Development join it and use it well. Build contacts on LinkedIn. Make a great LinkedIn profile. Put up a professional photo of yourself. Keep at it.

I absolutely agree with Nadzeya's answer, and I'd like to emphasize that while online courses are a fantastic way to improve your knowledge, there's truly no substitute for hands-on experience in software development. In the past, I know I've felt uncertain when applying for jobs, wondering if I'd be a good fit. However, it's essential to remember that we often are our harshest critics. So go ahead, confidently apply for any iOS developer role that piques your interest, and keep persevering!

Furthermore, you can explore websites like UpWork, where you'll find a wealth of freelance projects to tackle. These opportunities not only enhance your skills but also give you valuable experiences to showcase on your resume and LinkedIn profile. Additionally, if you haven't done so already, consider launching a GitHub repository. Here, you can create and share iOS projects, which can be shared on LinkedIn and other platforms.

Keep putting yourself out there, continue building your expertise through practical experience, and you'll undoubtedly find the role you're looking for!

Luke Trimberger's answer is excellent. Adding to his #2: build a portfolio, I'd add that you should upload your code to GitHub and use that as your portfolio site. This will show prospective employers your work, and also that you know how to use tools like git which are de facto standards in the industry. Put a link to your GitHub site in your LinkedIn profile.
