Being in college in my opinion is truly what you make out of it. If you want to have fun while you are there then you will find the things and the people to have fun with. I remember college being some of my best years. I played hard and I worked even harder. I eventually found a way to strike a balance (and that's really all you need to equip yourself with ) to make those years the best of your years. But I do agree with you when you said you just have to experience it to truly know what it's going to be like.

In college, you have a lot more freedom so it is really up to you how you spend your free time. You have to create a schedule so that you study hard and also have time to relax and have fun. If you end up studying all the time, you are likely to get burnt out, and if you relax and go out all the time, you are more likely to end up with poor grades. Friends will come if you put yourself out there, especially if you go to a big school so I suggest you join some organizations that line up with your interests as soon as possible because I regret not doing so sooner. When it comes to school, it is really all up to you if you want to go to a lecture or skip it and figure out how to make it up but once you start skipping, it is sometimes hard to stop, and then you are behind on a lot of material for an exam.

It is more fun than high school. You have more control over your daily schedule.
However you are paying to be there so there will be more personal responsibility. Even though there is less assigned homework, you should actually spend more time reading and studying.

Hi Banita,
That's so exciting that you are pursuing college and asking about the college experience! In short, College CAN definitely be all that it's all cracked out to be if you seize the opportunities that college presents!
I definitely agree with Gessie in that College is totally what you make of it. I think one of the biggest changes you will experience on day 1 of your college experience is independence. Once in college, you have the independence to decide how involved you are with activities, clubs, lectures as well as what opportunities to you seek.
As a teacher, I always told my high school students that college is exactly what you make of it. My advice for you start doing on day 1 to get the most out of your college experience. You'll see that college gives you a great amount of freedom and independence that you may be experiencing for the first time in your life (especially in a school setting). Take this freedom and seek out all opportunities available to you! Go to office hours, talk to your professors, make a commitment to attend all of your classes and study sessions, seek out tutoring, form study groups with friends/in your dorms etc. etc.
It's so easy for students to not seek out different opportunities and stay in their comfort zone because there isn't anyone telling them that they have to. My advice for you, seek out as much as you can from your college/university and you will undoubtedly have a great experience.
Best of luck as you continue to explore college opportunities!
