Hello future Hokie! I did not go to Virginia Tech but I grew up right next door and know many people who went there. They can be pretty competitive with grades and test scores, so make sure you're keeping those in a good place.

If I remember correctly when I was applying to schools (I did not actually apply to VT), the essay was optional, but I always recommend you complete one in this case as it gives you a chance to stand out. I don't know what the questions might be, but I suggest showcasing that you value community and work to expand your perspective and have a learning mindset in your everyday life. Virginia Tech is HUGE on community, so highlighting how you would fit into that atmosphere would be a plus.

Alumni may be able to give a more specific answer, but that's what I've got. Good luck!

Grades and SAT/ACT scores are of course the first thing that any college will look at. That said, there is much more to the picture. Having leadership and teamwork on your records helps a lot. Are you president or VP of an organization? Maybe a founding member of a club? Volunteer regularly somewhere? All these things come into play. Just don't overdo it on your application. It's pretty easy to see who was involved in a club and who joined to be able to put it on an application. As a former Hokie myself I wish I could provide more specific advice but the entry criteria for most colleges really don't change much. Show you're a good student by your grades and show you're a good person by your activities.

Also, if you are interested in the military (I think I saw another question of yours along those lines) be sure to check out the Corps of Cadets. If you plan on doing ROTC you will be required to be in the Corps (but you can also be in the Corps without doing ROTC).
