Isabelle, specialty training, such as in anesthesia happens AFTER medical school. So, the sequence after high school would be: undergraduate college for your bachelor's degree (typically four years), medical school (again, typically four years) at which point you are a physician. Then, if your goal is to be an anesthesiologist, you do a residency in anesthesia which is again another four years. At that point, you could take your board exams to become a board-certified anesthesiologist.
Another pathway some people pursue is to become a nurse anesthetist (CRNA oe certified registered nurse anesthetist). These are nurses (RNs) who have gone on for further training in providing anesthesia services under the supervision of a physician anesthesiologist. This would typically take 8 years after high school.
