Kris’s Answer

Construction work is not for the faint of heart. It is hard work, and will make you sore and tired. If you stay in good shape and use safe practices, you should stay healthy for a good 20 years. Eventually, knees, shoulders, and sometimes backs will cause trouble. Know your body's limits and increase muscle mass at the gym. Learn ways to carry things, lift things, perform repetitive motion without too much wear and tear on your joints or lower back.

Many people really enjoy physical work. It can make the day go fast and make you feel happy and productive.

Robert’s Answer

Chris,
Bob and Kris's answers are correct. If you like to do physical things and work with your hands, you will enjoy it. If you would rather wear nice clothes and sit in an office or work remotely at home with a laptop, then it is not for you. I'm 64 years old and have had my share of pain but if you use your head and follow safety procedures and not cut corners (just like driving a car) then you will be fine.

Good luck!

Bob’s Answer

A lot depends on which trade you are working in- a trim carpenter will have very different conditions for work than someone who is pouring and finishing concrete or installing shingles. I have been in the trades for over 45 years and yes the work will take its toll on your body- but it is important to stay in decent shape, get enough sleep, and live moderately. I often out work colleagues who are half my age because I work efficiently and quickly. I enjoy being active physically and as the Bible says- the sleep of the laborer is sweet.
