I am not a musician and can't play a single instrument, but my partner is a guitarist and has some advice. He has some advice that you mind helpful:
1. He uses plastic which is an affordable and practical option. Those can be found on Amazon (or elsewhere) for pretty cheap and the sound quality isn't that big of a difference. They also make brass ones.
2. Amazon also has real bone for pretty cheap.
3. Reverb is a site for people to sell used or cheap parts, so check that often to see if someone is selling high-quality ones.
4. There is a subreddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/diyguitar/) that you might find super helpful. Perhaps post your question there so that you can get answers from a community of DIYers
Hopefully, some of this helps!
