Amalya’s Answer
To write a good story, you need to follow some important rules, but not only that. Creative writing is complex, multivariate and ideologically challenging.
First, you should outline the main ideas of your story. Second, it is necessary to design the main and secondary characters. Third, plan in advance all the actions that the characters will need to make in order to realizing the ideological content of your story.
Good luck and happy writing!

It really depends on the story.
For fiction, let your mind go wild and free for a while, see what it picks up and singles out. For non-fiction, stick to the facts and don't stray. Readers are discerning enough to pick up on what an author is trying to say.
After all that, just write. You might not write the great American novel, but I'd suggest not even trying that. Write YOUR novel, your story, not something that compares to anything else. Be inspired, borrow what you need and make it yours, but don't try to be like anyone else.
Just write, and let the story flow onto the page as much as you can. You'd be surprised where the ideas can go if they're left unchained.
