Applaud your career choice Angelica. The path to become a vet is one that takes a lot of hard work and determination, but people I know who've studied and practice in the field find it amazingly rewarding. I attended Purdue University which has one of the country's premier Veterinary schools and became familiar with the program through friends. Depending on the universities that you attend for your pre-vet programs and degrees, you may find different degree availabilities. Primarily, most students will focus on their first basic career degree in biology, animal science ( usually available at schools with strong agriculture programs) or zoology. Because entry in vet schools is competitive, it is recommended that you also consider working even while in high school either through a part time job or volunteering with animals at a local vet, humane society or animal care facility. Continue this as much as you can through your initial collegiate program. It may give you that edge in showing your interest and getting you prepared for what you will face in your future work.
I would recommend going to the website www.aavmc.com (Association of American Veterinary Medicine Colleges) and read through some of their information and free brochures.
Wish you great luck in your career!
