Hello! My name is Lizeth and I am a current high school student. I'm conducting an interview with any professional in the pediatric certified registered nurse anesthetist field for a Foundations in Health Science Class project about careers! I have created a total of 13 questions. Comment on this post, answering all 13 questions to be a part of my assignment.

1) What profession did you choose Why?

2)How many years of college did you need to go through?

3)What jobs did you work before you landed your present professional job?

4)How can I decide if I should earn a Ph.D. in this field?

5)Were you in a college program?

6)Did you have to pivot and go back to school at a later date?

7)Did you shadow another professional in the field?

8) Did you join any school clubs related to your current profession?

9) Was there a particular subject you struggled with during your school years?

10) What skill sets did you learn or gain while pursuing your career?

11) What was the last stressful situation you encountered in your job, and how did you react?

12)What's one challenge you occasionally or regularly face in your job?

13) What is your philosophy with medicine and treating patients?

Thank you comment icon Hi Lizeth, you've asked a ton of great questions, but listing them all at once can be overwhelming for professionals. I highly encourage you to ask each one individually (or search to see if its already been asked) so that professionals can answer each question in detail! Gurpreet Lally, Admin

Hey Lileth,

Unfortunately, I am not a pediatric nurse anesthesiologist but I would love to help with your project, so I've done some research that you might find helpful!

2)How many years of college did you need to go through?
It really depends, but it looks like it takes about eight or so years. They used to require you to get your Bachelor's (RN) before enrolling in a CRNA program. However, last year they made a huge change! CRNA will no longer receive their Master's but will earn a Doctorate Degree instead! Now the process looks like this: 4 years of undergrad to become an RN, get 1-3 years of clinical experience, and then you can enroll in a DNP program (Doctor of Nursing Practice). (source: https://nursejournal.org/nurse-anesthetist/how-to-become-a-crna/)

3)What jobs did you work before you landed your present professional job?
Many CRNAs work as RNs before completing their DNP programs.

4)How can I decide if I should earn a Ph.D. in this field?
As is the case for most majors, Ph.Ds are are normally only required for those interested in becoming professors or going into research.

6)Did you have to pivot and go back to school at a later date?
Because of the clinical hours requirement that you have to do before completing your DNP, you will need to leave school for at least a year or two.

7)Did you shadow another professional in the field?
Regardless of your profession, I'd highly encourage you to do some shadowing! Maybe ask your local clinic if there is anyone you can shadow for a day.

9) Was there a particular subject you struggled with during your school years?
There are always going to be difficult subjects but that shouldn't deter you from your goals! I was a psychology major and had to take a calculus class. For most people, that's not a big deal but as someone who has struggled with math since middle school, it felt like the end of the world. Well, I took the class and knowing that I would have a hard time, I put all my effort into it. I did all the homework, did practice problems, and studied my butt off. It ended up paying off in a big way! I had the highest grade in the class. If you work hard enough, anything is possible.

10) What skill sets did you learn or gain while pursuing your career?
I would say that through this career, you will learn to become a better communicator, time management skills, and critical thinking (source: https://www.onetonline.org/link/summary/29-1151.00)

11) What was the last stressful situation you encountered in your job, and how did you react?
Although I can't answer this directly, there is a thread that might be helpful. It talks about stress in this field: https://www.careervillage.org/questions/559381/as-an-anesthesiologist-technician-how-do-you-deal-with-stress-in-fast-paced-environments

12)What's one challenge you occasionally or regularly face in your job?
Here is a thread on challenges that might be helpful: https://www.careervillage.org/questions/189523/as-a-nurse-anesthetists-what-is-the-hardest-thing-youve-done

13) What is your philosophy with medicine and treating patients?
Such a great question and I hope you get an answer!

Please let me know if this doesn't answer your questions and I can try to send over some other resources!
