What a wonderful dream Ana! My son just graduated in May with a dual degree in music education and voice performance. There is a bit of a perception that a degree in music/voice is not that hard, but it is challenging and requires a lot of dedication at most colleges, institutes and universities that carry the major. It usually involved courses not only centered on the voice itself ( which is considered the "instrument" of a music degree) but includes courses in music theory, history and various types of performance. There are a lot of hours spent in the basic course study and often later in the day participating in either choirs, recitals or seasonal performances of musicals or operas (depending on the schools offerings and concentrations.)
I would definitely recommend setting up an appointment with the Boston Arts Academy and other schools you may be interested in. Most applications processes for music majors involve auditions along with the usual school application. You should choose a minumum of three schools to audition and apply to. Some schools are more competitive than others, and taking the time to visit and meet with counselors there will give you an idea of standards, courses and requirements. We found in the process that some schools had all music majors on a five year program, while others did offer a four year more traditional degree. You also want to check if the concentration on the scgool is for musical theater, opera, choral or any combination of those. Might help determine where you want to apply if you aren't interested in their emphasis.
Wish you all the best. It's a wonderful career choice!

I am in the middle of my music education degree and agree with much of what Tina Miller wrote. Getting a music degree is HARD! But, for me, working with children, seeing your practice pay off, and getting those experiences are worth it.
