Dr. Kelly’s Answer
I don't work for a security company, but I work for an defense contractor within the protective services/life safety department.
"Genius" may be a subjective term. Also, as someone who is a doctoral candidate, I don't consider my a genius, but I do consider myself well-versed in my subject matter. This is an outlier though outside of the field of academics and clinical/criminal psychology. In 15 years of security, I knew one Ph.D holder. Besides for myself, only two non-managerial officers hold a master's in a related field. As I have said in a previous security- related post though, academic backing matched with experience in different settings, generally produces officer who are better at report writing when they respond to accents, thefts, or incidents.
Remember large security contractors and companies are as much a business as any other. They rely on site contracts if they are not internal, and replace people to align with the needs of the person signing the check. As a result, they often value people who are on time, willing to stay until relieved, and are pleasant to those around them. Unarmed guards rely on their words to problem solve, deescalate and/or encourage others to act. Some people do not excel at this, but types are when there is a proven unwillingness to learn/follow policies.
