Vikki’s Answer

Hi Chris - companies often look for soft (or power) skills as well as your academic qualifications. What I mean by this are skills such as:
leadership/ taking ownership; creative problem solving; adaptability; team work; passion for the business; client focus; drive to achieve; Communication. So think about these skills and you can show specific examples against each.
For example - passion for the business: as per the answer above, maybe get some certifications outside your school exams to show that you are interested in certain digital skills. You could look at SkillsBuild (just google).. Or you might have build an amazing project which you can share. Or client focus - you might have a part-time job working in a shop - how do you give your customers the best experience. Top employers really want to see candidates who are self-starters and use their initiative - which is all about leadership.
Hope this helps and good luck!

Allan’s Answer

Hey Chris, I completely concur with Vikki's response. As a hiring manager at IBM, my main priority is to focus on soft skills like effective communication and leadership. These abilities are crucial when interacting with clients and coworkers. You can enhance these skills by joining school clubs or taking on a leading role in school projects.

Another significant aspect I consider is the capacity to learn and adapt. With technology evolving at such a fast pace, it can be tough to stay updated with expert-level knowledge. However, if you demonstrate a willingness to learn and adjust to new technologies, it leaves a great impression on potential employers.

Best of luck to you!

I would check the job descriptions (in your field of interest) for companies you are interested in. Use the job description to understand which skills, qualities, and experience these companies value and look for.

Hey Cris, it's amazing that you're aiming for a dream company that many of us aspire to join. I may not have the perfect advice, as I'm not working there myself, but I applaud your decision to make it your first choice. As a newcomer, you might find it easier to get in if you have some impressive certifications. Consider exploring hot trends like cloud computing, data science, and blockchain, especially if you're from a computer science background. Wishing you all the best!

While working at a famous company may sound intriguing, it may not necessarily be all it's cracked up to be! I'd reach out on LinkedIn to people at those companies in the field you're interested in. Get their take on what it's like to work there and what things they would recommend you ask or skills they think are important.

Moazzam’s Answer

Absolutely concur with the other responses here. Soft skills are incredibly appealing to the majority of employers. Many individuals concentrate only on their technical abilities to get into large corporations like Facebook, Google, and so on. However, it's often said that a person can take classes and acquire technical expertise, but it's not as simple to learn soft skills. To develop these, one must be in a setting where they can observe and learn from leaders and individuals with excellent communication abilities. This can happen in various places, like workplaces, professional or social gatherings, or even in your own schools.

Tessa’s Answer

To be recognized at a company I recommend connecting with team members and your manager to learn about what they value in a team member. Example - being collaborative, organized, attention to detail and having a positive attitude. Managers and companies love to have individuals that try to be solution oriented instead of focusing on the negatives of a situation. Try to network by introducing yourself to others, get to know them as a person and understanding their working style. This will set you apart as someone that is a team player and engaged in their day to day.

I completely agree with the others who have called out soft skills. You can teach someone a new system, but it's very hard to teach someone how be a better communicator. I would also encourage you to look for ways to stand out among the crowd. Don't be afraid to be creative!

Kira’s Answer

A lot of large companies have a massive number of applications - the kinds of things that make you stand out at a Google or Meta are the same things that will make you stand out at smaller or lesser known companies!!

- A lot of larger companies build tech stacks in house - if you can show that you have experience or knowledge of their technologies, that would give you a huge bump up! If you are looking at a job at AWS - showing you understand and have experience on AWS, that's great. Meta has its own programming language, so if you can show you can use that, that would help you stand out.

- Working in an environment where you have immediate accountability can help you gain amazing experience and responsibility quickly, which would help for your next step.

- Open source contributions are huge - companies will reach out to you proactively if they see you on open source communities.

- Look at the people in the departments where you want to work - and see where they worked before they worked at the big companies. A lot of the time, there are companies that bigger companies poach from so that's a great place to start!

- In our experiences, having nontraditional experiences set me apart from engineers that had more linear career paths. Don't be afraid to think about how all of your experiences feed into your marketability.

Kira recommends the following next steps:

Look holistically at all of your experiences, skills, and schoolwork and figure out how to incorporate as much of that as you can.
Talk to alumni who have worked at the companies you're targeting.
Look into college internships! Most of the big companies have large, paid, internship programs!
