Do you ever get bored of being an accountant?

I am asking because I want to do something related to math, but do not want to be stuck doing the same thing everyday and eventually getting bored. Because I have worked so hard for a job, I do not want to end up not liking it. #accountant #accounting

Emily’s Answer

The great thing about accounting is that is has evolved to include so much more than skills in math. An accounting career can include many different types of assurance - financial, technology, or compliance. One of the benefits about going into public accounting is that you can switch up what you are doing based on the client you are working on. Having jobs on different types of clients keeps you from feeling like you do the same thing every day.

Great question. I never get bored being an accountant, and I have been working for 25 years now. I learn something new everyday, I get to travel and meet many new interesting people along the way. There are a lot of different career paths within the accounting profession. I decided to go into public accounting because it gave me the opportunity to work with many different clients and teams. I was also able to work in different offices and countries.

Danny’s Answer

It is possible to get bored doing any job, but public accounting at a large firm offers some advantages.

The three things I enjoy most about the job are: interacting with a lot of different, very intellegent people; working with new clients with unique challenges; and having many opportunities to grow my knowledge.

While accounting professionals use math, and make calculations as part of our day to day work, the math tends to be relatively simple. If you are very interested in advanced mathematics, you may not find accounting math to be terribly exhilarating.

Hi Thythy,

Great question! If accounting was boring, I wouldn't have been in this field for 10+ years. Every day brings a new experience or challenge and the people I work with definitely makes the day more interesting.

Preet’s Answer

That's a great question! I believe it depends on where you work and the tasks that you're responsible for! During my college/university education, I used to work as a bookkeeper at a small insurance brokerage and I found it monotonous. It was very repetitive as it involved performing the same task on a regular basis - some daily while others monthly. Currently, I'm working at a large public-accounting firm and I find it far from monotonous! You have the opportunity to work on multiple clients that are part of different industries and you often find yourself doing different things daily. As you move up in your career at a public-accounting firm, you learn new things and work on more challenging stuff.

That being said, being an accountant is a very broad career path; it does not limit you to just 'number crunching'. I'm sure that accounting careers in industry can also be very exciting - at the end of the day, it's personal preference.

Thythy -

Thanks for the question.

That's a great question. I would respond to this by asking if you know of anything that you do for 12 hours/day for 15 years and not get bored at times. If you know of this activity let me know and I'll sign up!

In all seriousness, yes, as with anything you do get bored occassionally. When I find myself in this position I actively look for opportunities to step outside my comfort zone and do something I've never done before. Fortunately in a profession as diverse as accounting and an organization as dynamic at PwC it's never long before that boredom is a distant memory.

I hope this helps.

Ian’s Answer

It was never boring as an accountant, especially at PwC. You will get to experience different clients/industries and travel to exotic places. In addition, you have the option to transfer to other cities at your own discretion. Also, you will consistently learn from your managers, peers and clients. It has been really rewarding from my experience.

Kristina’s Answer

I have worked in public accounting since I graduated college, and like many other responders, I have never been bored. I agree that seeing a variety of clients, working collaboratively, and learning/teaching create a very interesting work environment. I want to add that I also believe the emphasis on continuous improvement prevents the profession from becoming boring. We are always trying to improve the way we work and build efficiencies that cut down on monotonous tasks. If we do have a task that is boring, we are encouraged to try to think of a way to do it better. I believe it is a common misconception that accounting is boring and encourage you to listen to employees in various positions to see what type of work sounds most interesting to you.

Melissa’s Answer

I believe that in most accounting jobs there will always be challenges, and opportunities for growth. As an accountant, your tasks may not always be the same depending on the industry you are in. I think that there will always be learning opportunities in any position. Within accounting there are also many different job opportunities (auditing, fraud accounting, tax), and I believe that working as an accountant helps to open up a lot of doors for future possibilities.
