what would be the best double major for someone who wants to be a prop maker?
I want to be a prop maker and costumer for theater and TV. I am planning on majoring in technical theatre, but am not sure what would be best for my double major

I agree that Technical Theatre can be a pretty heavy major on its own. I honestly would recommend having multiple minors or just taking a lot of craft-based classes. I went to a conservatory so it was a little easier for me but the classes that I feel have helped me the most with props have been my fibers, sculpture, woodworking, drafting, etc. Basically, any course that taught different types of hands-on skills.

Why do you need to double major? From someone with a Design/Tech degree who attempted a Political Sciences major, I would recommend focusing in on one major. Design:tech IS a valid degree program, and you’ll gain plenty of real world career insight. I’ve done professional theatre, however as my family has grown and I’ve made connections, my post college career path has led me to a corporate leadership role in a different industry (an industry I’m fortunately very interested in though.) I was literally just explaining how I utilize my arts background EVERY day nonetheless. Theatre production- especially if you’re very involved in the department is a true case study in “real world” productivity. Everything from people management (have you ever Stage Managed? And the attitude that requires) to sales (basically just acting most of the time, and required for far more “pitches” than things you’re trying to get people to buy) to public speaking and presentations in unfamiliar environments to running a budget to successful project collaboration and interdepartmental unification. My GPA wasn’t great- I was very, very active in my department, but all of the extra classes I took for the double major kind of lowered my attention to everything, and became a barrier from excelling in one thing. Arts degrees are legit, and I dare say prepare you more for business than anyone could ever realize. Coming out into the industry your portfolio and theoretical knowledge will be far more important than good grades in some other random subject. My thoughts would be that it’s important to focus- and enjoy your focus. You’ll come out ahead that way. On a different note, I ended up with a degree Theatre Design/ Tech Emphasis and Social Sciences Minor. If I could do it all again, I would not have let myself feel the need to be so pushed and second guess what I was doing. My quality of life outside of class would have been much better as well. You can get through it, your degree will be legit, and you will be great! Just stay involved in what that department is doing and in the summer as well. You can always explore “professions” on the side over the summer, etc if need be.
