Should you do two year prerequisites for pharmacy then go straight to pharmacy school, or do four year and get a bachelor's of science then go to pharmacy school?

I plan on becoming a pharmacist. #Pharmacy #medicalfield #Medicine

While you do not need a 4-year degree I have noticed that it has helped many students to have a transition to graduate school a bit easier. Also, it is never a bad idea to have the additional knowledge that comes along with said degree. If for some reason you change your mind or choose another path having that degree will allow for more opportunities. With all of that said, each student needs to choose what path they want to lead and what timeframe they want to complete that in.

Gilbert’s Answer

Doing 2 year prerequisites is the minimum requirement to go to pharmacy school. Most of the times, it’s isn’t a choice whether you choose do only do prerequisites vs getting a bachelor degree. If you are accepted to a pharmacy school after only doing 2 years, I encourage you to do so. However, reputable pharmacy schools are very selective and that a candidate with a bachelor degree may have an edge.

I completed a bachelor degree in Biochemistry before I went to pharmacy school, I certainly felt that was more prepared for 4 years of vigorous graduate schooling.

Scott’s Answer

Both options are possible and appropriate. It depends on you as a student and your maturity as a student to handle the rigors of pharmacy school. I personally finished my BS prior to pharmacy school and was glad I did so as I was a more mature student with much better study skills. That being said, I know many students that have been very successful entering the professional program after 2 or 3 years.

The most important thing is to set yourself up for success when you enter the program.

Scott recommends the following next steps:

Determine your own study skills and your maturity in regards to school and make you decision.
Determine if staying in school 2 more years in the big picture is worth it? Some believe it is beneficial to have the BS degree prior to the PharmD since it is only 2 more years.

Dinah’s Answer

Now, pharmacy school are becoming more competitive. Some pharmacy school are looking at if you finished with a bachelor's degree and in what field. The minimum is 2 years of undergrad and then you can apply to pharmacy school. I encourage you to finish all 4 years and graduate with your bachelor's degree. If the school you are looking into applying is allowing for 2 years of prerequisites, that's great! You can also apply to undergrad with a school that already has a pharmacy program. This way, you have a priority seat to incoming pharmacy students from other colleges.

Herman’s Answer

Hi Andrew,

I believe you need a bachelors degree to apply to pharmacy schools in the United States. However, I do know people who went to programs where they combined the bachelors with the pharmacy degree in 5 years. You should check those out.

Best,
Herman
